Iceland is a country in the North Atlantic near the Arctic Circle - probably isn’t the first place you think of for a perfect beach holiday. But every year, thousands of people take off their clothes and swim at the Blue Lagoon, a beach 45 km away from the capital city, Reykjavik. The air temperature can be as low as -10 degrees: but the water comes from underground and is naturally hot - the usual water temperature is between 35 and 40 degrees. It’s like taking a hot bath in the open air!

It was a fine Summer day in Sherwood Forest in England, and the year was 1194. Early in the    morning, a poor man went into the forest to try and find some wood for his fire. Suddenly the man wearing a  green shirt and green trousers rode up and dropped a bag of arba with   money into the poor man's hands. ‘Who are you?' asked the poor man. ‘I'm Robin Hood,' said the man in   green. ‘I take money from rich people and I give it to   poor people.' ‘Hurrah! Hurrah!' cried the    poor man. ‘I'm rich! I'm rich!' Robin Hood thought for a  minute. Then he took out his sword. He pointed the sword at the man and said, ‘Rich, are you? Well, then, give me your money!'

Read the text about English and answer the questions.

English is an important global language - but that doesn't mean it’s easy to learn. Many experts have tried to make English easier for students to learn. R.E. Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling. So he invented a language called Anglic. It was similar to English but with much simpler spelling. ‘Father’ became ‘faadher’, ‘new’ became ‘nue’ and ‘years’ became ‘yeerz’. Sadly, Anglic never became popular.

1.R.E. Zachrisson is a surgeon from Mexico.
2.Anglic is a version of English with easier spelling.
3.Anglic was extremely popular.
4.English is very easy to learn.
5.Experts try to make English learning easier.

Scientists and psychologists agree that although many factors contribute to forming your personalityperson, one of the most important is your position in the family. If you are a firstborn child, you are probably self-confident and a good leader. You may also be bossy and even aggressive if you don't get what you want. You are ambitious and good at communicatingcommunicate because you learned to speak from your parents, not from brothers and sisters. On the other hand, you are the oldestolder and so you have to be the most responsible, and this can make you the kind of person who worriesworrys a lot.

Morris is a young American on holiday in Europe. Read his holiday diary and answer the questions.

I was going by bus to Prague. I fell asleep somewhere in the north of France. I felt so tired and when I woke up I was in another country. The motorway was full of big German cars and everybody drove at about 150 km per hour! At about 10 o'clock we stopped at a gas station and I went into the shop for something to eat and drink. Then I remembered that I had only dollars, not euros. In the end, a very kind person exchanged my money. Life was good: I had food, drink and it was only four hours to Prague. There was only one problem - the bus wasn't there!!!

Read the poem and fill in the missing parts.

fluffy clouds, paints the rainbow, never seen, lightning flash, quite round
I Wonder.
I wonder why the grass is green,
And why the wind is never seen          .
Who taught the birds to build a nest,
And told the trees to take a rest?
And when the moon is not quite round           ,
Where can the missing part be found?
Who lights the stars when they blow out,
And makes the lightning flash                about?
Who paints the rainbow                   in the sky,
And hangs the fluffy clouds              so high?
Why is it now, do you suppose,
That Dad won't tell me if he knows?

Read the text and answer the questions.

The Marquess of Bath was 18 when he inherited £23 million. Now the 85-year-old aristocrat lives surrounded by rich and educated people and spends his time painting, writing, and generally enjoying himself.
‘I have never really thought about having money because I’ve always had it. But I have never been extravagant, in fact, I’ve been rather mean. For example, I’ve never bought any Ferraris. I just try to buy what I need. Am I happy? Well, I’m not unhappy. The most important thing money gives you is freedom. If I lost my fortune, the worst thing for me would be that I wouldn’t be able to do exactly what I want, but I would have to start working for a living. If there was a revolution and I had to choose a job, I suppose I would like to be a long-distance lorry driver. Firstly, because I love travelling, and secondly because you are your own boss. I suppose I could have a more or less happy existence like that, but the idea of losing everything is not very pleasant.’

1.He inherited £2 million.
2.Now the Marquess is in the middle of his eighties.
3.He believes that rich people lose their freedom.
4.If he lost all his money, he wouldn't start working.
5.He considers that a long-distance lorry driver is an interesting job.

Read the text about learning words and choose the right answers.

One of the most common aids to memory is the First Letter Memory Aid. It involves learning the first letter of the points or words in a list that you want to learn. First, list the points or words you want to remember. Then take the first letter of each word and turn them into a silly sentence or a phrase. For example, suppose you want to remember ’New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Madrid, and Berlin’ (in that order): take the initials of each city and make a sentence (in your language), e.g. 'Nobody Likes Pizza with Tomatoes, Meat, and Bread’. Then imagine a horrible pizza with bits of bread, meat, and tomatoes. The image will then help you remember the sentence, and then the words.

1.The method is called "Last Letter Memory Aid".
2.According to the text, scientists say that this method doesn't work.
3.The main idea of the method is to take the first letter of each word and turn them into a silly sentence or phrase.
